George Arney

Sir George Alfred Arney (* 1810 in Salisbury ; † April 7, 1883 in Torquay ) was the second Chief Justice of New Zealand from 1858 to 1875 .

Early life

Arney was born in Salisbury , England in 1810 . His parents were William Arney, a lawyer, and Maria Charlotte Arney. He was educated at Winchester and Brasenose College , Oxford . He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1832 and a Master of Arts in 1833 . He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1829 and was admitted to court in 1837.

He married Harriet Parr in 1835. However, she died only 7 years later.

New Zealand

He was named Chief Justice of the Colonial Office by Thomas Gore Browne on September 2, 1857, on the recommendation of Judge John Coleridge, 1st Baron Coleridge , to replace his predecessor William Martin . He met Gertrude on the Brig in Auckland on February 19, 1858 . From 1858 to 1875 he was New Zealand's Chief Justice. Under Governor George Bowen he was also appointed Administrator of the Government on October 1, 1869 , and served in this capacity from March 21, 1873.

Arney represented the governor for the three months between the departure of George Bowen and the arrival of his successor, James Fergusson . Arney passed the business of government to Fergusson on June 14, 1873.

On February 20, 1858 he became a member of the Legislative Council of New Zealand and remained in this position until his resignation on June 13, 1866. In 1862 he was promoted to Knight Bachelor . and in 1875 dismissed from the judge's office by Governor George Edward Gray . His successor in office was James Prendergast .

Arney retired in Torquay, UK . His brother, Colonel Arney, who had served in New Zealand in the 58th Regiment, died in Cheltenham on April 6, 1879 . Arney received a notable inheritance from his brother. He died in Torquai on April 7, 1883.

Arney Street in Paeroa , part of State Highway 26 , was named after him.
