The Otago Daily Times ( ODT ) (founded in 1861) is the oldest still existing independent daily newspaper in New Zealand . The newspaper is based in Dunedin and has an average daily circulation of just under 42,000 copies (2008) for the entire Otago region , the southern area of Canterbury and the northern area of Southland . The average number of readers in 2008 was around 101,000.

history

It was the gold rush in Otago (1861–1863) that brought a lot of money and numerous people to Dunedin and thus provided the basis for bringing a daily newspaper onto the market. In 1861, when the Otago gold rush broke out, Dunedin had two weekly newspapers, the Otago Witness and the Otago Colonist .

Julius Vogel (1835–1899), a talented journalist, came over from Australia in 1861 and found employment with the Otago Colonist . William Cutten (1822-1883) was employed at this time as a journalist for the competition paper, the Otago Witness . Both of them quickly recognized the potential for a daily newspaper in the rapidly emerging Dunedin. They joined forces, founded the Otago Daily Times on November 15, 1861, and went down in history as the publisher of New Zealand's first daily newspaper.

Even if the daily newspaper The Press from Christchurch , today's competitor of the ODT, was founded on May 25, 1861 and can thus call itself the oldest newspaper still published in the South Island , the title goes to the Otago Daily Times , because The Press , like other newspapers, initially only appeared weekly.

Cutten terminated the partnership with Vogel in November 1864. In his place, Benjamin Farjeon entered into partnership with Vogel as a businessman. Vogel, already more interested in politics, sold the newspaper together with Farjeon in March 1866, but remained as editor until April 1868, when he devoted himself entirely to politics.

In 1877 the Otago Daily Times was sold to the owner of the Otago Guardian , who merged the two companies, laid off the Otago Daily Times workforce , discontinued the Otago Guardian on October 7, 1877 and continued the Otago Daily Times as a daily newspaper.

The Otago Daily Times survived to this day as a branded product and as an independent daily newspaper all concentrations and attitudes in the New Zealand newspaper market. As an independent company ( Otago Daily Times Limited ), the newspaper only succeeded until 1975, when the company merged with the Evening Star to form Allied Press Limited and the Evening Star on November 3, 1979 as a daily newspaper in favor of the Otago Daily Times was discontinued. The company Otago Daily Times Limited was dissolved on May 31, 2000th

today

The Otago Daily Times continues to serve the readership of the Otago region and parts of Canterbury and Southland undisputed, is supplemented by the Star (advertising paper, interspersed with articles), which appears weekly free of charge from the same company , and has expanded with the online edition of the newspaper, including the paid Archives adapted to the trend of the market.

But the overpowering, Australian-based media group Fairfax Media Limited , which controls almost all other major daily newspapers in the New Zealand newspaper market apart from the New Zealand Herald in Auckland and the Otago Daily Times in Dunedin , leaves no stone unturned in stealing market share from the Otago Daily Times . The Dscene , which has been published free of charge every week since 2008, was therefore placed in the Dunedin market as a mixture of Otago Daily Times and Star with a young and striking appearance.
