Dame Sian Seerpoohi Elias , GNZM , QC (* 12. March 1949 in London ) is a New Zealand lawyer who since 1999 as Chief Justice Supreme Court President ( Supreme Court ) and Acting as such in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016 Governor General of New Zealand was.

Life

Sian Elias, daughter of Armenian refugees who graduated after attending the Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland studying law at the University of Auckland , which she with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) graduated. In 1970 she was admitted to the bar, but initially completed a postgraduate course at Stanford University , which she completed with a Master of the Science of Laws (JSM). After her return, she took up a position as a lawyer in Auckland in 1972 and was also a member of the Law Commission between 1986 and 1990 . For her lawyer's merits was 1988 Crown Counsel (Queen's Counsel) appointed. In 1995 she was a judge at the High Court ( High Court ) called.

On 17 May 1999 Sian Elias has been in place of Thomas Eichelbaum the first woman Chief Justice , making it since January 1, 2004 President of the newly established Supreme Court ( Supreme Court ) . In 1999 she was ennobled as Dame Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (GNZM). As Chief Justice she held office between the changes of the respective incumbent from March 22 to April 4, 2001, from August 4 to 23, 2006, from August 23 to 31, 2011 and most recently from August 31 to September 28 2016 acting as governor general of New Zealand .

Sian Elias, who is married to entrepreneur Hugh Fletcher, also runs cattle breeding.
