Wolfgang Unger

Wolfgang Unger (born December 31, 1948 in Eibenstock , † April 19, 2004 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German conductor , choir director and university teacher in Halle and Leipzig.

Unger was trained at the Dresden Kreuzschule and sang in the Kreuzchor under Rudolf Mauersberger . He was first choir prefect there from 1965 to 1967. He then studied choral and orchestral conducting in Weimar .

In 1969 he founded the Thuringian Academic Singing Circle , which he headed until 1996. In 1973 Unger was appointed Kapellmeister and Choir Director of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Halle . He was also director of the Robert-Franz- Singakademie Halle . In 1985 he received the Handel Prize of the Halle district .

In autumn 1987 Wolfgang Unger took over the artistic direction of the Leipzig University Choir . In 1991 he was appointed University Music Director at the University of Leipzig . He also taught choir conducting / conducting at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig and at the University of Leipzig.

After Hans-Joachim Rotzsch was dismissed , Unger became Thomaskantor ad interim in 1991 , until Georg Christoph Biller was hired in 1992 . With the founding of the Pauliner Chamber Orchestra in 1992 and the Pauliner Baroque Ensemble in 1994, Unger brought the Leipzig University Music to life. In the discussion about the redesign of the university premises, Unger advocated the reconstruction of the St. Pauli University Church . In 2003 Unger was appointed adjunct professor.

At the age of 55, Wolfgang Unger died of cancer. In the funeral service, which took place on April 26, 2004 in the Leipzig Thomaskirche , the three choirs Thuringian Academic Singing Circle, St. Thomas' Choir and Leipzig University Choir said goodbye to their former director.

Wolfgang Unger was the father of the church musician Johannes Unger .
