The Trinity Church in the Thuringian district town of Sondershausen is an Evangelical Lutheran church which, along with the princely residence palace, is one of the city's most important architectural monuments. It once served the Princely Family von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen as a court church with its own ruling class inside. The last members of the royal family were buried in the attached mausoleum.

history

There was a capella in Sundreshusun as early as 1174 . Your location is unknown. The St. Andrew's Church, which was demolished in 1608, stood at the current location of the Trinity Church. In 1620 the new church was solemnly consecrated. The building was created according to plans by the builder Peter Sengelaub . It fell victim to the city fire of June 3, 1621 and was rebuilt at longer intervals in the second half of the 17th century. The current structure goes back to the work of the 17th century. The neo-Gothic princely grave chapel was added on the east side in 1890/91 . Church renovations and alterations took place in the years 1890/91, 1931/32 and 1987 to 1997.

architecture

The church tower on the west side is six storeys high and has a three-tier Welsche dome . This is followed by the nave with the gable roof. There are five ogival windows on each side wall. The middle window on each side is only formed in the upper half, because the entrances to the ground floor and the galleries are below. On the north and south walls, stairs lead from both sides to an acute-angled porch. In the middle of the porch are arched entrance portals. On the north side at the transition from the nave to the choir is a Wendelstein to the ruling class. The south wall was extended to the east, in which the sacristy is on the ground floor and the library on the upper floor.

The three-aisled interior with four wooden pillars each, which support the barrel vault and the galleries, leads to the choir with a pointed triumphal arch. The pulpit on the south side of the choir was built at the end of the 17th century. In front of the choir on the north side, the rulership was added in 1691. It consists of three glazed upper floors with coats of arms and monograms. The basement is kept open and simple. There are three paintings above the altar (Last Supper, Entombment and Resurrection of Christ). Behind the organ prospect from 1680 on the west side, a new Hey organ was installed in 1997.

The oldest special house bell from 1623 from the Trinity Church was extensively restored in Nördlingen in 2005 . On Thanksgiving Sunday on October 2, 2005, their bells called the believers to worship again.

Furnishing

The portrait “ Martin Luther on his deathbed” is attributed to Lukas Furtenagel . There is evidence that it was painted on the death bed and has hung over the altar of the Trinity Church since 1620.

The collection also includes two chalices from the 14th century.

The manuscript “Düringische Chronik des Johannes Rothe” from the second half of the 15th century and other treasures are in the church library.

Princely burial chapel

The princely mausoleum from 1890/91

The princely grave chapel ( mausoleum ), often also referred to as the princely crypt , is a neo-Gothic extension in the form of a choir apex chapel with an octagonal floor plan, a tent roof and a crowning lantern. According to plans by the princely building inspector Heyder, it was implemented in 1890/91 in the course of further structural changes at the request of Prince Karl Günther. On the north side is the portal, opposite to which there is a figure of Christ in a niche below a round window. The interior has been decorated with a starry sky from 1897 by the court decorator Ernst Schedensack (1865–1925).

The mausoleum serves as the final resting place for seven deceased members of the Princely House of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen , whose magnificent stone sarcophagi, warped with lion's feet and biblical sayings, were designed by the building councilor Otto Erlandsen (1858-1910).

The following people were buried (order according to year of birth):

  1. Prince Günther Friedrich Carl II. (1801–1889)
  2. Prince Karl Günther (1830–1909), son of 1
  3. Princess Marie , b. Princess v. Sachsen-Altenburg (1845–1930), wife of 2
  4. Princess Elisabeth (1829–1893), daughter of 1
  5. Prince Leopold (1832–1906), son of 1
  6. Princess Marie (1837–1921), daughter of 1
  7. Prince Hugo (1839–1871), son of 1
