Karl Günther von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen (born August 7, 1830 in Arnstadt ; † March 28, 1909 in Weißer Hirsch near Dresden ) was the last Prince of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen in the period from July 17, 1880 until his death.

Life

Karl Günther was the son of Prince Günther Friedrich Carl II von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and his first wife Marie von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. He married Princess Marie von Sachsen-Altenburg on June 12, 1869 (born June 28, 1845 in Munich ; † July 5, 1930 in Sondershausen).

Karl Günther attended the University of Bonn and then joined the Prussian Army . Here he took part in the German War in 1866 , then came to the officers à la suite of the army and was finally promoted to General of the Infantry on September 18, 1886 .

He took over the government on July 17, 1880 from his father, who appointed the Hereditary Prince as his successor due to an eye disease. He was the last prince of the Sondershausen line of the Schwarzburg Princely House . Prince Karl Günther was a passionate hunter. He left the government to his minister of state.

In 1906 Karl Günther was seriously injured in a hunting accident and spent the last three years in a sick bed. The prince left no children and thus no biological heirs. He was buried in the princely burial chapel of the Trinity Church.

Because after the succession contracts of 1713 and 1896, when the Sondershausen line was extinguished, the principality should pass to Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , Günther Viktor von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ruled both principalities in personal union as Prince of Schwarzburg from the death of Karl Günther in 1909 .
