The Schischem is a 34 km long river in the Zollernalbkreis and the Rottweil district in Baden-Württemberg , which flows approximately westwards at Epfendorf from the right into the upper Neckar .

geography

course

Its source is 1.5 kilometers north of Tieringen (district of Meßstetten ) at an altitude of 880  m above sea level. NN . In the center of Tieringen, the river approaches the European watershed at around 50 meters. Beyond this, the Obere Bära, also originating in Tieringer district, competes with the Danube .

On its 34.4 kilometer long way west through the Swabian Alb , the Alb foreland and the Gaulandschaft along the Neckar, the Schischem crosses or touches the following places and communities:

At Schömberg the Schischem is dammed up by the Schischemtalsperre to a reservoir, which is also developed as a bathing lake. It is crossed by the Schischem Viaduct of the Balingen – Schömberg railway line (formerly the Balingen-Rottweil railway line).

East opposite Epfendorf the Schlichem flows around two kilometers below the so-called Schlichemklamm (local name Schlichem- pools ) in right down to this substantive nature reserve Schlichemtal from the right in the upper Neckar .

Catchment area

The almost 109 km² catchment area of the Schischem borders in the northwest on that of the small downstream Neckar tributary Schenkenbach . Behind the adjoining, very long watershed in the north-east, the Stunzach competes first , then the Eyach receiving water longer . In the southeast the already mentioned Upper Bära runs over the Bära to the Danube , then on the left watershed first in the south the right Bära upper course Untere Bära . In the southwest, several streams on the other side strive from the right to the Neckar, among them the medium-sized Starzel and the small Weiherbach , which flow off via the Prim , and the direct tributary Wettebach are worth mentioning .

The greatest heights in the catchment area rise above the plateaus on both sides of the Oberlauftal in the Alb, which are often over 950  m above sea level. NHN lie. The highest point is the wooded summit of the Rainen southeast of Ratshausen at 1006.1  m above sea level. NHN , over which the southern watershed runs. The similarly high right watershed misses the upper running section with 998.6  m above sea level. NHN on the summit of the Split Rock of the Schafberg plateau just barely crossed the 1000 meter limit.

Tributaries and lakes

By far the largest tributary is the Schwarzenbach , which flows into the lower reaches from the left and from the south-east, including its upper reaches about 14 km long , which arises in the foothills of the Alb south of Schömberg and accounts for about a quarter of the total catchment area.

On its way to the Neckar, the Schischem also flows through four landscape protection areas :

tourism

The local recreation area Oberes Schischemtal around Schömberg was named after the Schischem. A Schlichen hiking trail leads from the source to the mouth and was inaugurated in April 2014.

Rotenzimmern can be reached via the Schömberger and Balingen train stations via a bike-hiking shuttle from Tübingen with free bike transport on weekends and public holidays in summer. Hohenzollerische Landesbahn tourist trains from Tübingen to Kleinengstingen (carriages 4–5), Schömberg (carriages 3) and Sigmaringen (carriages 1–2) reach the Obere Donau nature park and continue by bus to the starting point of the Schischem hiking trail in Tieringen . An early train has been offering full-day excursions since 2015. Less experienced hikers can divide the Schischemwanderweg into two stages to Rotenzimmern.
