Protection purpose
The main protection purpose of the nature reserve is the preservation of the Schischem valley with its circulating mountain and the gorge-like dug into the layers of shell limestone as a unique geological and landscape-historical document of special character and beauty and as a richly structured area with rock formations, steppe heather, sheep pastures, grasslands, wet meadows and different forest types, which are the habitat for a multitude of rare and endangered animal and plant species.
The area-related conservation objectives of the bird sanctuary are described differently depending on the species :
Breeding birds
Breeding bird species that are listed in Appendix I of the Birds Directive and for which special measures are to be applied across Europe. A total of 39 species fall into this category in Baden-Württemberg , only one species in the “Schischemtal” protected area.
Peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus )
Preservation of the open rock walls and quarries with caves, niches and ledges, preservation of habitats without sources of danger such as non-bird-safe overhead lines and unsecured chimneys as well as preservation of undisturbed or at least undisturbed breeding sites during reproduction in the period from February 15 to July 30.
Migratory birds
Other migratory bird species not listed in Appendix I that breed in the country and have been selected for the protected areas. A total of 36 species fall into this category in Baden-Württemberg, none of which are recorded in the “Schischemtal” protected area.
Contiguous protected areas
The nature reserve and the bird sanctuary are congruent. The 2,203 hectare FFH area “ Neckar Valley between Rottweil and Sulz ” and the landscape protection area “ Neckar Valley with side valleys from Rottweil to Aistaig ”, which is 1,598 hectares in size , are designated as contiguous protected areas .
