Christian Eggers (born September 15, 1938 in Geislingen ; † January 10, 2020 ) was a German child and adolescent psychiatrist and specialist in paediatrics . At the University Hospital Essen , he was the founding director of the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and played a key role in developing youth psychiatric care in Essen and the Ruhr area .

Life

Christian Eggers is the son of the chemist Hans Eggers (1905–1996) and Gertrud Helene Lilly Schmidt-Lauenstein (1902–1976) - both came from respected merchant families from Celle and Bremen. As a result of his refusal to join the NSDAP , Hans Eggers were denied leading positions in the Reich Patent Office or the Battelle Institute .

The first child, daughter Bärbel, was mentally retarded. Christian Eggers was born prematurely and was judged to be "not viable". So from early childhood he questioned his right to live.

In 1958 Eggers began studying at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . Above all, he valued researchers such as Otto Koehler , Friedrich Oehlkers and Fritz Pringsheim , Eggers' liaison lecturer, who received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation .

From 1962 Eggers studied in Marburg and began his clinical traineeship in 1963 - first at the pathological institute of the Bremen-Mitte Clinic , then at the St. Antonius Hospital in Wissen and finally in the children's clinic at the Philipps University in Marburg . In 1965 Eggers passed the state examination. During the subsequent time as an assistant at the Marburg Child Psychiatric Clinic, he began his dissertation , which was later rated magna cum laude : He examined the course of schizophrenic psychoses with a very early onset (age of onset between seven and 14 years) in 57 patients who have now reached adulthood had.
