Protection purpose

Limestone turf in the Dießen Valley

According to the regulation, the protective purpose (extract) is:

  • the preservation of the numerous karst springs and the tufa channels that arose from them as geological and geological objects of study and research and an example of an ecosystem that reacts sensitively to changes in the water balance.
  • the preservation, promotion and development of the various meadow and pasture communities, which range from near-natural, species-rich semi-arid lawns to cabbage thistle and oat meadows and high herbaceous meadows that accompany streams and are food, habitat and retreat areas for an exceptionally rich insect, small mammal and avifauna;
  • the maintenance and promotion of a diverse range of perennial fringe flora along field hedges, forest edges, paths and rivers as an ecologically important transition and buffer area for different vegetation structures and habitats;
  • the preservation of the hedges and field trees in exemplary form and diversity as well as the stone bars as components of the historical cultural landscape on shell limestone and habitats of numerous plants and animals;
  • the maintenance, promotion and development of the near-natural course of the Dießenbach with its meanders, the woody vegetation that accompanies the stream and the moist to wet meadow types that are characterized by the Bachaue;

particularities

A colony of the Great Mouse-eared Mouse with around 500 individuals lives in the roof structure of the church in Dießen . According to the appraisal, this colony could only emerge and survive thanks to the near-natural equipment of the Dießen Valley and side valleys with its abundance of insects, because bats are exclusively insect eaters. Another special feature of the area is the occurrence of calcareous troughs, which arose where the lime-laden seepage waters of the shell limestone were forced to escape through impermeable layers.
