history

At the site of today's Albeck castle ruins, fragments from the Bronze Age were found . Around 380 the castle was fortified by the Alemanni . After 910 a Count Alwig I. von Sulz is referred to as a reconstructor. The Counts of Sulz are first mentioned in 1095 .

In the years 1251/52 the castle came to the Geroldseck family through the marriage of a countess to Walter von Geroldseck / Diersburg . The time of Henry I. (Lord of Hohengeroldseck and Count of Sulz), in 1284, gave the Roman-German King Rudolf von Habsburg , the city rights to the town below Sulz. At the end of the 13th century, the castle was expanded in its current form by the Barons von Geroldseck. In the feud against Bubenhofen in 1414, Albeck Castle was not conquered, unlike the town of Sulz.

In 1469 Albeck Castle is besieged by Count Eberhard im Bart with 4000 men and 400 riders. On October 3rd, 1471 the castle was conquered, Hans von Geroldseck and 3 sons were taken prisoner in Hohenurach Castle . Two years later, in 1473, the Geroldsecker gave up their property and received a severance payment from Count Eberhard von Württemberg . In the years 1618 to 1648 the castle was occupied by Bavarian troops . The castle was renovated by compulsory labor in the surrounding villages during the Thirty Years' War and in 1678 also by compulsory labor. The castle was destroyed by fire and demolition by French troops on December 30, 1688.

Later, the castle and the property belonging to it came to the barons of Hayn. From Mr. Hayn buys the Württemberg court domain chamber the Geroldseck manor with a contract dated July 20, 1864 for 150,000 guilders.

In 1969 a Dr. Brand from Lahn bought the castle ruins for 5,000  DM from the Württemberg court chamber administration. The city of Sulz then acquired the ruins in 1978 for DM 33,000. On March 10, 1995, the Albeck Ruin Association was founded.

Building description

There are remains of the defensive walls as well as the palas , with numerous window openings (old arched windows).

Old seating niches and beam supports have been preserved. An outer weir system runs in the forest. A courtyard and another defense system are probably buried under the hill and await their exposure. (To be recognized by the floor plan of the castle).

Landscape protection area

Around the castle ruins, the district office of Horb designated a landscape protection area under the name Schafweide near the ruins of Albeck by ordinance of 9 July 1959 . On March 29, 1971, the district office of Horb partially repealed this ordinance because the landscape protection area was largely incorporated into the Albeck nature reserve . Only a remaining area of 0.6 hectares was preserved as a landscape protection area under the name Ruine Albeck and its surroundings (parcel 5774) . The area has the protected area number 3.25.023.
