Wildenstein Castle

The Wildenstein Castle is the ruin of a Spur castle on 625  m above sea level. NN above the Eschach valley in the district of Horgen in the municipality of Zimmer ob Rottweil in the Rottweil district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The castle, together with the Rotenstein castle opposite, was used to monitor a section of road between Rottweil and Villingen at a crossing over the Eschach.

In 1315, Aigelwart von Falkenstein was first mentioned as a member of the family sitting in the castle. In 1399 the castle was owned by Balthasar von Kirneck . The complex was probably a Dienstmannenburg of the Lords of Lupfen , because in 1466 the Wildenstein Castle, which was then destroyed and then referred to as the Burgstall, and its court were lent to the St. Georgen Monastery by Count Heinrich von Lupfen .

In the 16th century the castle was still in ruins, on the Rottweiler Pürschgericht map from 1564 it was recorded as a ruin, although Oberrotenstein or Rotenstein Castle on the opposite bank of the Eschach was still intact.

description

The castle stood on a rocky outcrop on a long meanders, on three sides by the Eschach and steep Umlaufberg , and was accessible only from the west side. The castle square is divided into three areas by four trenches that cross the entire mountain spur , on the west side, on the adjoining plateau there was the core castle , this was followed by two fortresses towards the spur peak .

In the area of the main castle, the remains of the wall of a square tower are still visible, which rose directly above the deep moat. Its dimensions are 11.5 by 11.5 meters with a wall thickness of 3.7 meters. This tower was probably a residential tower , because its usable inner area is about seven by seven meters. To the east of this tower standing in the northwest corner of the main castle was another building, probably the former palace of the castle. The entire south side of the inner bailey used to be the courtyard, bounded by a curtain wall , in which there was also a cistern . The east side probably served as a specially walled-in kennel , with access through a gatehouse.

In the middle part of the castle there was probably a farm building, it was protected by palisades . The easternmost area possibly had a watchtower with the help of which one could overlook the floodplains.
