Protection purpose
According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the main protection purpose of the nature reserve is:
- the maintenance and promotion of the floodplain of the forest well, with its extensive stocks of sedge, reed beds and tall perennials and the corresponding fauna;
- the preservation and promotion of the relatively small, species-rich semi-arid grassland as a food and habitat for a particularly numerous and sometimes highly endangered insect fauna
- the preservation and promotion of the hedges and field trees and the reading stone bars as defining components of the historical cultural landscape of the shell limestone as well as feeding, living and retreat areas of a rich small mammal and avifauna;
- the maintenance and promotion of a particularly diverse perennial border flora as an ecologically important link between intensively and extensively used areas;
- the preservation and promotion of the different meadow types and their pronounced diversity of vegetation as well as the ecologically valuable orchards as feeding, living and retreat areas for a highly endangered insect, small mammal and avifauna.
The protection purpose of the landscape protection area is the preservation of extended living and retreat areas for the flora and fauna occurring in the nature reserve as an ecologically sensible and therefore necessary supplement; the preservation and promotion of a varied cultural landscape, equipped with natural landscape elements of the Heckengau and Schlehengau, as an aesthetically very appealing recreational area, as well as the preservation of the agriculturally used areas and the near-natural forest edges with their herb fringes to promote a balanced natural balance.
Flora and fauna
The endangered field buttercup is one of the area's accompanying flora . Narrow-leaved cottongrass , broad-leaved cattails , swamp forget-me-nots , marsh skullcap and snake knotweed grow on the moist sites . The last-named plant is the irreplaceable food of the marginal ring mother-of-pearl moth . The mountain bumblebee and the changeable bumblebee fly in the area, which only occur in the Gäu in Baden-Württemberg . The hedges of the area are inhabited by typical hedge breeders such as the blackcap , rattle warbler , red backed killer and yellowhammer .
