Forchenkopf is a nature and landscape protection area designated by the Karlsruhe Regional Council of December 18, 1992 with the number 2.164. The protected landscape area of ​​the same name has the protected area number 2.37.045.

location

The protected areas are located in the Black Forest-Randplatten natural area . They are located northeast of the Wittlensweiler district of the city of Freudenstadt and are part of the FFH area No. 7516-341 Freudenstädter Heckengäu .

Protection purpose

According to the regulation, the protection purpose of the nature reserve is:

  • the preservation and promotion of the particularly diverse perennial fringes along the roadsides, hedgerows and forest edges;
  • the preservation and promotion of the relatively small-scale semi-arid lawns exposed to the south as a food and habitat for a particularly large number of insect fauna;
  • the preservation and promotion of the stock of hedges and field trees in various forms and compositions as a habitat and retreat for a rich small mammal and avifauna;
  • the preservation and promotion of small-scale alternately humid locations in the Lower Muschelkalk as a special feature in this area;
  • the promotion of a multi-layered, near-natural forest with corresponding soil and shrub flora.

The protection purpose of the landscape protection area is the preservation of an extended habitat and retreat for the flora and fauna occurring in the nature reserve as an ecologically necessary supplement as well as the promotion of the relatively extensively used meadow and arable land and the orchards to maintain a balanced natural balance as a buffer zone for the nature reserve.

Flora and fauna

The semi-arid grassland on the south-facing slopes of the Forchenkopf provide a habitat for around 40 butterfly species, some of which are endangered, such as the great blue butterfly and the blue-blue . The semi-arid grasslands are also an ideal location for the common fringed gentian and for many orchids such as the two-leaved forest hyacinth and the mosquito-handelwort .
