The Santa Ynez Valley is a valley in Santa Barbara County in the US state of California .
The valley lies between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the San Rafael Mountains near the city of Santa Barbara . The Santa Ynez River flows through the valley from east to west. In the Santa Ynez Valley, around 20,000 people live in the six villages of Solvang , Los Olivos , Santa Ynez , Buellton , Ballard and Los Alamos .
economy
The main industry is viticulture . There are more than 70 wineries and tasting rooms in the Santa Ynez Valley . The area is designated as an American Viticultural Area . There are also numerous apple farms in the valley, which, among other things, maintain stalls on the streets. Horse breeding and equestrian sports are practiced throughout the valley and a historic western atmosphere is maintained. Famous horse ranches are Monty Roberts ' Flag is Up Farms and the nationally known Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center. Tourists visit the valley primarily for the many artist galleries, wine tasting rooms and antique shops as well as the comfortable resorts and guest anches. Because of the year-round good weather, outdoor activities such as hiking and biking are popular in the nearby Los Padres National Forest. Tourism experienced a boom with the 2004 film Sideways, shot in the Santa Ynez Valley . Cyclist Lance Armstrong trains annually in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Neverland Ranch is located near the village of Los Olivos , and from 1988 to 2005 the residence of the singer Michael Jackson, who died in 2009 .
