Nijaz Duraković

Nijaz Duraković (born January 1, 1949 in Stolac ; † January 29, 2012 in Sarajevo ) was a Yugoslav or Bosnian political scientist and politician .

Life

He studied sociology and political science at the University of Sarajevo and received his doctorate in 1979. He was a lecturer there, and from 1986 as a full professor for comparative political systems research and international relations .

From 1989 he was chairman of the Bosnian regional association of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia . After its dissolution he was chairman of the successor party Socijaldemokratska partija Bosne i Hercegovine (SDP); in this office he was succeeded in 1997 by Zlatko Lagumdžija . During the Bosnian War , Duraković was a successor to Fikret Abdić of the seven-member Bosnian presidency, which was otherwise dominated by the nationalist parties. In 1998 he was elected to the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a member of the SDP . He participated in the establishment of the Socijaldemokratska unija Bosne i Hercegovine (SDU), a spin-off from the SDP. In 2006 he was re-elected to the Federation's Parliament for the SDU. In 2010 he was unable to return to parliament. He was married and had two daughters.
