The Schwalbe-Arena ( spelling : SCHWALBE arena ) is a multifunctional hall in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Gummersbach . Since the handball Bundesliga season 2013/14 it has been the new home of Bundesliga club VfL Gummersbach . Before that, VfL played in the outdated Eugen-Haas-Halle with only 2100 seats or, from 2001, sporadically in Cologne's Lanxess Arena , which was uneconomical because of the cost and size. The table tennis Bundesliga club TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt also plays its home games in the Schwalbe Arena. For handball games, the arena will offer visitors a maximum of 4,132 seats (3,189 seats and more than 800 standing places as well as eight boxes ).

history

The new building in the city center with a gross floor area of 10,500 m² was built on the former company premises of the plant manufacturer L. & C. Steinmüller . The event center Hall 32, which was built next to the Schwalbe Arena, is structurally connected to the arena and offers space as a business and VIP area before and after games as well as in the breaks. A good five million euros were budgeted for the renovation of the old Hall 32. The city is also building a shopping center with 15,000 m² of retail space for 80 million euros, the parking spaces of which can also be used by visitors to the Schwalbe-Arena. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated in mid-October 2014. The planned inauguration of the Gummersbach Forum had to be postponed from spring to autumn 2015. The interior of the rectangular hall is equipped with movable telescopic grandstands. For other events, the tiers can be pushed one below the other and the entire interior can be used. The energy supply is secured via a local heating network by feeding a wood chip heating system . In addition, a photovoltaic system is installed on the roof.

In October 2011, the last financing gap for the construction was closed. The 2.4 million euros outstanding to cover costs were covered by companies and private individuals using the modular concept . Overall, the costs were estimated at 10.4 million euros. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia , the city of Gummersbach , VfL Gummersbach and companies jointly financed the new hall. The city contributed the building plot worth 290,000 euros. Following a Europe-wide invitation to tender, HBM Stadien- und Sportstättenbau GmbH and the HPP architects' office (Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner GmbH + Co. KG) received the order from Arena Gummersbach GmbH & Co. KG, founded in July 2010, to design and build the Sports and event hall. In 2010, the bicycle tire manufacturer Schwalbe , also the main sponsor of VfL, bought the naming rights to the new hall. In mid-June 2012, Arena Gummersbach GmbH and HBM Stadien- und Sportstättenbau signed the contracts for the construction of the new hall.

On October 17, 2012, 140 people were present, including Heiner Brand and the current VfL team, the groundbreaking ceremony for VfL's new home . Fans and interested parties could get a first impression of the new VfL venue at the open house on May 22, 2013. At this time the arena received its hall floor.

VfL Gummersbach welcomed the TV Emsdetten team to the Bundesliga premiere on August 24, 2013 in front of around 4,000 spectators . After a half-time deficit of 10:13, VfL won the game in the end with 27:23 goals.

Opening tournament of the arena

For the inauguration of the Schwalbe-Arena, a tournament was held on August 9th and 10th, 2013 with the hosts VfL Gummersbach, TUSEM Essen , the French record champions Montpellier AHB and Union JURI Leoben from Austria. The semi-finals of the tournament took place on August 9th in the Eugen-Haas-Halle. The next day there was a move through the city from the old to the new hall. After the inauguration of the Heiner-Brand-Platz in front of the arena, the game for third place was played before the final followed the official opening of the hall.

TUSEM Essen won third place in the opening tournament with a 37:31 against the team from Leoben. The home side secured the tournament victory in front of 2900 spectators. Against the southern French from Montpellier it was 30:27 after the end of the game.
