The Wilhelmshavener HV (Wilhelmshavener Handball Club) is a German handball club based in Wilhelmshaven .

The Union

The club was founded in 1995 from the handball department of the Wilhelmshaven Police Sports Club . Since the 1999/2000 season, the club has played its games under the current name Wilhelmshavener HV .

In 2002, the WHV rose to the handball Bundesliga after winning a relegation against SG Solingen . In the first year of the Bundesliga, WHV struck Frisch Auf Göppingen twice and defied THW Kiel in their own hall. In the end, the team finished 15th. The 2005/2006 season ended with the WHV in 16th place in the table, so that two relegation games against TSV Bayer Dormagen had to secure their stay in the top division. In the 2006/2007 season the club reached a respectable 11th place. One of the highlights of the season was a 34:32 home win against SG Flensburg-Handewitt on May 16, 2007. The 2007/2008 season resulted in a total of only four wins. The coach Klaus-Dieter Petersen , who was signed on January 18, 2008, could not change this either, so that with 18th place after six years in the 1st division, he was relegated to the 2nd division North .

In the first second division year after relegation, it quickly became apparent that the WHV would not succeed in relegation. Before the 2009/2010 season, the team was significantly younger: the average age at the beginning of the season was 22.6 years. The Bundesliga season began with seven defeats in a row and finally ended with only nine wins (out of 32 games) in 14th place. At the end of the season, the club separated from coach Petersen by mutual agreement; The new coach was the previous assistant coach Andrzey Staszewski.

In February 2011, the club announced that, for financial reasons, “the license application for the new single-track second division will no longer be pursued”. Although the 2011/2012 season started with three wins in the 3rd League West , coach Staszewski asked in September 2011 "for personal reasons" to terminate his contract. Christian Köhrmann continued to lead the team as a player- coach until the end of the season . In this role, he also trained the team in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons, focusing more and more on the coaching role from the bench. In the 2014/15 season, WHV won all league games and rose again to the second Bundesliga with a score of 60: 0 points. The 2015/16 season ended with the club in 6th place after promotion with 47:33 points.

The WHV plays its home games in the Nordfrost-Arena , which has 2,200 seats and a total of 2,433 spectators.

The association currently (as of September 1, 2006) has approx. 300 members, including 170 active members, who are divided between eleven different teams (men, women, youth).
