Evgeny Vorontsov ( Russian Евгений Воронцов Jewgeni Voronzow ; born June 6, 1986 in Chelyabinsk , Soviet Union ) is a Russian - German handball player who has been playing for the Wilhelmshaven AG since 2009 .

Career

When Evgeny was six years old, he and his family moved to Trnava in western Slovakia . His father Alexander Vorontsov received a contract as a handball goalkeeper there in 1992. In 1998 the family ended up in Varel, Lower Saxony, via the stopover in Prague . While his father was guarding the gate of the then second division club HSG Varel , Evgeny went through the club's youth teams. In 2003 Evgeny decided to join the sports boarding school of SC Magdeburg . There he played in the second team and in the A-youth of the club, which was with him in 2004 German handball junior champion.

At the beginning of the 2004/05 season he returned to Varel and strengthened the HSG's second division team. In 2007, the young right winger moved to the traditional club VfL Edewecht , which was then playing in the regional league. Continuously good performances brought Evgeny Vorontsov into the field of vision of Bundesliga club TUSEM Essen , who signed him at the beginning of the 2008/09 season. At the time the transfer was announced, Vorontsov had topped the list of goalscorers in the Regionalliga Nord with 196 goals. However, TUSEM got into financial turmoil and was forced to file for bankruptcy in November 2008 .

For the 2009/2010 season Vorontsov joined the second division Wilhelmshavener HV . Although the club announced in February 2011 that it would not be able to pursue the license application for the new single-track second division for financial reasons , the left-hander remained loyal to the WHV, which will henceforth play in the third division. The fact that Vorontsov was able to participate in a new training model for top athletes in Wilhelmshaven was taken into account in his decision. He completed an apprenticeship as an IT systems clerk over a longer period of time than the training regulations actually provide. This gave him the opportunity to combine training and sport. In 2015 Vorontsov rose to the second Bundesliga with the Wilhelmshaven HV. He quickly became one of the club's top performers and main goal scorers.
