The association for physical exercises Edewecht from 1897 e. V. ( short: VfL Edewecht ) is a sports club from Edewecht , which is known nationwide for its handball department.
VfL Edewecht includes departments such as basketball , badminton , soccer , health sports , golf , handball , judo , dancing , table tennis , gymnastics and gymnastics and volleyball .
Handball department
The handball department was founded in 1961. In the first few years, the first men's team played at the district level. In 1978 he was promoted to the district class. After ten years, he was promoted to the district league in 1988. From 1992 the I. men's team played in the Weser-Ems League before promotion to the Association League in 1996 could be achieved. VfL spent the 1999 seasons in the Oberliga, until they were promoted to the Regionalliga in 2001. The team achieved their greatest success so far in the club's history in the 2008/2009 season by winning the championship in the Regionalliga Nord and being promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga (North) .
The second men's team of VfL caused a big surprise when they qualified for the first round of the 2006/07 DHB Cup . VfL lost to their neighbor HSG Varel with 25:33 (9:20). Another participation in the 1st round of the DHB Cup 2007/08 , the first team of VfL lost against the former league competitor VfL Fredenbeck with 27:31 (11:13).
In April 2013 the game operating company VFL Handball Spielbetriebs-Ltd. & Co KG , which had provided funds for the 1st team, and the Förderverein insolvency . At the end of May 2013, the club announced that it would withdraw its team from the 3rd division; A new start in the league was planned, but the club withdrew its team before the first match day of the 2013/14 season and was thus determined to be relegated to the association league without a single game.
In the 2014/15 season, the first team of VfL Edewecht started with a completely renewed squad in the Association League North Sea. Here, in the first year, the promotion to the Oberliga North Sea could be achieved.
For the first league season in 2015/2016, the squad was largely kept together, only partial changes were made. The result of the first Oberliga North Sea season was finally shown in an excellent 3rd place.
VfL Edewecht also started the second season in the Oberliga Nordsee 2016/2017 with some newcomers with the aim of being able to play in the top of the league again.
In May 2019, the first team of VfL Edewecht was canceled from the game. Then the previous second team became the first.
basketball
Basketball has been a new sport offer at VfL since September 2013. The VfL Edewecht Wattworms have already achieved promotion to the district class during this time.
