The Candidates Tournament Budapest 1950 was the first candidate tournament of the World Chess Federation FIDE and took place from April 11th to May 20th 1950 in Budapest as a double-round tournament with ten participants. Vasily Smyslow and Paul Keres were placed as participants in the Moscow World Cup tournament in 1948 , plus the top placed at the Saltsjöbaden 1948 interzonal tournament . Max Euwe and Samuel Reshevsky , participants in the Moscow tournament, were unable to attend. Reuben Fine also received an invitation, but, as in 1948, showed no interest.

After 18 laps, David Bronstein was able to catch up with the leading Isaak Boleslawski . So both were tied at the top. From July 31st to August 27th there was then a playoff in Moscow for participation in the 1951 World Cup . After twelve games it was a draw, the first game decided in favor of an opponent made Bronstein a World Cup challenger.

The players in places three to five were eligible to participate in the next candidates tournament.
