The SG VTB / Altjührden (full name: Spielgemeinschaft Vareler Turnerbund / Turnverein Altjührden) is a German handball community in the North German Handball Association based in the town of Varel in the Lower Saxony district of Friesland .

In the course of its history, the syndicate changed its composition and name several times: After the merger of the handball departments of the Vareler Turnerbund and the TV Altjührden in 1974, it played under its current name for almost 30 years, before the handball divisions of the two sub-clubs together with the handball departments of the Varel associations TuS Obenstrohe and TuS Dangastermoor founded the HSG Varel in 2002 . The new syndicate took over the playing rights of SG VTB / Altjührden for the 2nd handball league and changed its name to HSG Varel-Friesland after relegation in 2011 . Since July 1, 2016, SG VTB / Altjührden has been playing again as a syndicate of the Vareler Turnerbund and TV Altjührden under its original name, and in the 2019/20 season it will compete in the major league. The economic sponsor of the syndicate is the HSG Varel-Friesland UG .

Overall, the syndicate took part as SG VTB / Altjührden and HSG Varel in 24 seasons (1981/82, 1984 to 1995, 1999 to 2011) in the 2nd handball Bundesliga , only TV Emsdetten , TV Hüttenberg and EHV Aue played longer in this second highest division in German men's handball, which has existed since 1981. In the all-time table of the 2nd handball Bundesliga since its foundation, the SG VTB / Altjührden has been in 9th place out of 166 clubs. The most famous players who wore the SG VTB / Altjührden jersey include the future German national players Jan Fegter and Johannes Bitter . The SG VTB / Altjührden plays its games in the Manfred Schmidt sports hall in Altjührden with around 1200 seats; the former pillar hall was named on November 24, 2006 after the long-time handball sponsor Manfred Schmidt, who became known nationwide through his furniture store maschal and who had significantly supported the construction of the hall in the 1970s.

After the merger of the handball departments of the Vareler Turnerbund and the TV Altjührden in 1974 and the beginning of the club's promotion by the local furniture store maschal , the handball team rose to the regional league under the new name SG VTB / Altjührden in 1976 with coach Leo Jeras for the first time second highest division, on. In the following years, the team usually achieved placements in the middle of the table. As third in the final table of the 1980/81 season, the SG VTB / Altjührden then qualified for the 2nd handball Bundesliga , which was founded in 1981 and replaced the regional league as the second highest German division. Their first of a total of 24 seasons in the 2nd handball Bundesliga, however, the syndicate finished third from bottom, so that it went straight back to the now third-class regional league.

It took only two years for SG VTB / Altjührden to return to the 2nd handball Bundesliga: after the team had finished the 1982/83 season in second place behind VfL Hameln and failed in the subsequent promotion games to Bayer Dormagen , they succeeded at the end of the 1983/84 season under the long-time player-coach Nikola "Niko" Beslac the rise. After returning to the lower house, the team established itself as a permanent member of the 2nd Handball Bundesliga North at the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s and stabilized in the middle of the league. Between 1987 and 1990 the later national player Jan Fegter also played for SG VTB / Altjührden. The best placement during this eleven-year second division was a 5th place in the 1991/92 season .

After the league was increased from 14 to 18 teams, the SG VTB / Altjührden then slipped in the table. At the end of the 1993/94 season the team managed to save themselves from relegation with a win on the last match day, but at the end of the 1994/95 season they were clearly beaten in 17th place and had to - together with local rivals PSV Wilhelmshaven ( today: Wilhelmshavener HV ) - to join the regional league.

As a second division, the SG VTB / Altjührden competed in the DHB Cup every year during this time. The team was able to achieve greater successes three times: In the 1986/87 season they failed only in the quarter-finals at the Bundesliga club HSG TuRU Düsseldorf , in the 1990/91 and 1993/94 seasons in the second round at the Bundesliga club TBV Lemgo and TV Großwallstadt .

After a 9th place in the first regional league year after relegation, the SG VTB / Altjührden took part twice in the then held promotion games to the 2nd Bundesliga, but failed in the 1996/97 season in the semi-finals at PSV Wilhelmshaven and in the 1997/98 season in the final at Eintracht Hildesheim . In the fourth year of the regional league, SG VTB / Altjührden, with coach Peter Kalafút, backcourt player Arkadiusz "Arek" Blacha and goalkeeper Aleksandr "Sascha" Vorontsov, laid the foundation for a return to the 2nd handball league with an away win in Wilhelmshaven: In the end the season - the promotion games had been abolished before the season - the team was two points ahead of local competitors.

After the successful return to the 2nd handball Bundesliga, the team played there for three years at the top of the league, u. a. with the later national goalkeeper and world champion Johannes Bitter in goal. Often more than 1,000 spectators came to the pillar hall, to the derbies against the Wilhelmshavener AG even more than 1,200. The backdrop was sometimes referred to in the press as the Hell of the North and between March 18, 2000 and February 3, 2001 13 Home wins in a row. Under the coaches Spasoje "Mane" Skercevic, Michail Wassiljew and finally Arek Blacha as player-coach, the team reached a 5th place and two 3rd places in the seasons 1999/00 , 2000/01 and 2001/02 , so that these years were more sporty The most successful time of the gaming community.

In 2002 the HSG Varel was re-established by the four Vareler clubs Vareler Turnerbund , TuS Obenstrohe , TuS Dangastermoor and TV Altjührden . In the following years, however, the new syndicate slipped in the table of the 2nd handball Bundesliga, at the end of the 2004/05 season they escaped the sporting descent only due to license withdrawals from other clubs. However, the great interest of the spectators remained: for games with a much higher audience response, the team occasionally even moved to the EWE Arena in Oldenburg , for example on the occasion of the derbies against OHV Aurich or the Wilhelmshavener AGM. After the meanwhile tabular low point in 2005, significantly better placements were achieved again at times: The 2008/09 season - in the meantime the former promotion coach Peter Kalafút took care of the team again - was even finished in 6th place before the end of the season In 2010/11 the single-track 2nd handball Bundesliga was founded, for which HSG Varel did not apply for a license. In any case, the syndicate reached only 15th place in the table in their last second division season and thus did not qualify for the single-track 2nd handball Bundesliga.

In the DHB Cup, SG VTB / Altjührden and HSG Varel reached the 2nd or 3rd round seven times during this second, longer second division membership, but were eliminated several times against Bundesliga clubs, for example against TBV Lemgo in 2001/02 (20:29 ) or 2002/03 against HSV Hamburg (20:24). The only surprise came in the almost relegation season 2004/05 , when HSG Varel defeated the Bundesliga club HSG Düsseldorf, which failed in the quarter-finals in 1987, after double overtime with 33:32 and advanced to the second round in the third round , where the team then failed to Frisch Auf Göppingen (26:38).

After relegation to the 3rd division, the syndicate was renamed HSG Varel-Friesland . Due to the geographical location in the northwest, the team played in the following years alternately in the north and in the west season of the 3rd division. Every now and then she met long-term opponents from second division times such as the Wilhelmshavener HV, the OHV Aurich, the VfL Fredenbeck or the TSV Altenholz . The HSG Varel-Friesland achieved fluctuating placements in the middle of the table in these years, before the syndicate - since 2016 again as SG VTB / Altjührden - was relegated to the top division in 2017. In the 2017/18 season, the SG VTB / Altjührden then competed in the Oberliga Nordsee and secured promotion to the 3rd division three game days before the end of the season. There she played for a year in the west season, but rose again immediately.

In the 2019/20 season, the SG VTB / Altjührden competes in the Oberliga Nordsee, the fourth highest division. The win of the state cup played jointly by Lower Saxony and Bremen was recorded as a success during the season. At the Final Four tournament in the Manfred Schmidt sports hall at home, Altjührden defeated TV Bohmte 01 in the semifinals with 24: 8 and in the final against SG Börde Handball with 19:12. This qualified for the DHB Amateur Cup .
