The IHF European Field Handball Cup was an annual European Cup competition for field handball club teams organized by the International Handball Federation (IHF) . It took place only three times from 1968 to 1970 and was the only European Cup competition in field handball.
TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen was the winner of all three events .
background
Field handball lost more and more importance in Europe in the mid- 1960s . Since indoor handball was becoming increasingly popular, especially in the Scandinavian countries due to the weather conditions, the Dutch Handball Federation launched an initiative in 1968 to make field handball more attractive again. He was the driving force behind the development of the competition and also donated the trophy. However, only the associations in Germany , Austria and Switzerland showed interest. Only these four associations took part in all three tournaments played. After that, the project was considered a failure, especially since the European indoor handball cup had already established itself and had been played since the 1956/57 season.
qualification
The national champions of the previous season were entitled to participate. From the second event on, the defending champion was also automatically qualified.
mode
A round-robin tournament was played , with each team having to compete once against each other team. The team with the most points after these encounters won. In the event of a tie between two or more teams, the better goal difference was decisive. The game plan was designed so that the supposedly best teams played the last game. The IHF selected one of the participating teams as the host.
