Frank Löhr (born March 24, 1966 in Augsburg ) is a former German handball player and coach. He was used as a middle back player and was considered a defensive specialist. For the German national team , he completed 39 international matches, in which he scored 15 goals. He was also assistant coach in the selection for four years.
Career
Loehr began with six years in the TG Viktoria Augsburg with the handball matches and later moved to VfL Gunzburg , where he already with 17 years in the Bundesliga with 18 years in the national team debut. After the 1983/84 season he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with Günzburg . After getting promoted again a year later, the second division TSV Milbertshofen signed him , which, thanks to a major sponsor, attracted some well-known players and hoped for promotion to the Bundesliga and an establishment in the top German. The ascent succeeded promptly, but the descent could only just be averted twice in a row. In the 1989/90 season , the finals for the German championship against TV Großwallstadt were surprisingly achieved. In the third and decisive game, however, they lost just under 21:22 and became runner-up. However, the DHB Cup could be won in the final against THW Kiel . In the 1990/91 season, Löhr then managed to win the European Cup Winners' Cup as team captain with Milbertshofen . Despite a 15:20 defeat at Elgorriaga Bidasoa Irún , they were able to win the final second leg in Löhr's hometown Augsburg with 24:16. The title defense the following year did not succeed. In the final they lost to Bramac Veszprém . Löhr was called back to the national team after a long time, but was only intended as a substitute for the 1992 Olympic Games . After TSV Milbertshofen got into financial difficulties in 1993, he moved to VfL Gummersbach . When VfL was also financially troubled, Löhr joined the TSV GWD Minden in 1997 . Here too, like in Milbertshofen and Gummersbach, he was team captain. With Minden he reached the Final Four for the DHB Cup again in 2000 . However, they failed in the semifinals at SG Flensburg-Handewitt . Shortly thereafter, he initially ended his career. In April 2001, however, TUSEM Essen reactivated him until the end of the season.
Löhr acquired the Trainer A license in 1999 and after the Olympic Games in 2000 he became Heiner Brands co-trainer for the German national team. In this role he was involved in the 2004 European Championship title and second place at the 2002 European Championship , the 2003 World Championship and the 2004 Olympic Games . After that, the collaboration with the DHB ended .
