Aleksandar Svitlica (born May 28, 1982 in Prijepolje , Yugoslavia ) is a former Serbian and Montenegrin handball player . He is 1.89 m tall, weighs 89 kg and was mostly used as a right winger.

Career

Aleksandar Svitlica started playing handball in his hometown Prijepolje. In 2000 he moved to neighboring Montenegro to Budućnost Podgorica, in 2001 to Rudar Pljevlja and finally in 2002 to RK Lovćen Cetinje , where he made his debut in the first Serbian-Montenegrin league and won the national cup in 2003. In 2004 he moved abroad for the first time, namely to IF Guif in Sweden. There he was one of the top performers and was elected to the All-Star Team of the Swedish League in 2007. He then moved to BM Granollers in the Spanish ASOBAL league . He has been under contract at GWD Minden since 2011. In 2012 he was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga. After Svitlica played with Minden in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2015/16 season, he then returned to the Bundesliga. At the end of the 2017/18 season, his contract was no longer renewed. Shortly before the end of the season, he tore a cruciate ligament, which forced him to retire because the cruciate ligament had to be removed after complications.

From 2003 to 2006 he played a number of international matches for the Serbian-Montenegrin national team . Originally born in Serbia, Svitlica also took on Montenegrin citizenship in 2006 and completed 30 international matches for the Montenegrin national team . He made his debut at the 2008 European Championships in Norway. With the junior national team of Yugoslavia he won bronze at the U-20 European Championship in Poland in 2002.

Criminal trial

Svitlica was arrested in his apartment on November 16, 2017 on suspicion of aiding and abetting the trafficking of narcotics in not small quantities. Charges were brought against him on February 16, 2018. He was accused of having been involved in cocaine smuggling from South America to Germany by providing a five-figure sum of money. On August 31, 2018, Svitlica was sentenced by the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court to a prison term of 18 months, which was suspended.
