Walter von Oepen (born March 20, 1954 in Lüdenscheid ) is a former German handball player and coach . The right backcourt player was once German champion with TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen . He played seven international games for the German national team , with which he took part in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal .

Career

In 1975 von Oepen switched from Schalksmühler TV to the Bundesliga for the reigning DHB Cup winner TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen . In his first year at his new club, he experienced two disappointing defeats in the final. First, the team lost the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup against BM Granollers in extra time, followed five weeks later by a narrow defeat against VfL Gummersbach in the final of the German championship. However, the DHB Cup could be won with a victory over SG Dietzenbach . In the following year, winning the German championship was celebrated with a 21:20 win in the final against TV Großwallstadt . In 1979 he won the DHB Cup again. Due to injuries, von Oepen was unable to maintain his performance level sufficiently and rejoined the Schalksmühler TV for a year in 1980, but then returned to Dankersen and played for the fourth team in the 1st district class for another year.

He then became a player- coach at TuSpo Meißen and trained the C-, B- and A-Jugend Dankersens successively until 1988.

Walter von Oepen was appointed to the German national team for the 1976 Olympic Games by national coach Vlado Stenzel , where he played his first of seven international matches in the group game against Canada .
