Jovica Cvetković ( Serbian - Cyrillic Јовица Цветковић ; born September 18, 1959 in Belgrade , Yugoslavia ) is a former Serbian handball player and current coach. The native Yugoslavia, who was mainly used in the right back area, became world champions with his home country. At his prime, he was the most dangerous backcourt shooter in the Yugoslav State League. In the 1980s he was four-time top scorer in this league and once in the 2nd handball Bundesliga North. Most recently he was the coach of the Serbian national team .

career

player

Cvetković played from the late 1970s to the second half of the 1980s for his home club Red Star Belgrade in the Yugoslav league. Only for the 1984/85 season did the scorer move for one season to what was then the top club Metaloplastika Šabac . In the past season, Šabac was only defeated in the European Cup final against Dukla Prague in the seven-meter throw. In the following season, the cup should definitely be won. The squad was redeployed for a year. In addition to Cvetković, goalkeeper Dejan Lukić came to the Save for one season . In return, Miloš Karanović and Đorđije Rasić were awarded for one year. The plan worked brilliantly. In the European Cup of National Champions 1984/85 Metaloplastika could win all games. In the finals, Atlético Madrid were downright outclassed with 19:12 and 30:20. In addition, Šabac was sovereign Yugoslav champion. The two titles remained the only ones with club teams in his country. However, he was the top scorer four times (1981 / 82-1983 / 84 and 1985/86). In total, he scored 1729 goals in the State League. In 1987 Cvetković moved abroad. The first stop was TSV GWD Minden . There he was the top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga North. After a year, he moved to Spain in the División de Honor , where Cvetković ran for Elgorriaga Bidasoa , GD Teka Santander and Sociedad Conquense . In between he also played for Pallamano Conversano in Italy.

Jovica Cvetković took part with the Yugoslav national team at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . At the handball world championship in 1986 he won the title with his team. Cvetković was able to do his part as the Yugoslavs top scorer. He played 98 international matches by May 21, 1988, scoring 318 goals.

Trainer

After his playing career, Cvetković became a coach. Via Red Star Belgrade , his path took him to Metalurg Skopje in Macedonia for two years . After that he was coach of the Serbian national team from 2006 to 2009 . In July 2010 he took over the coaching position of the Romanian club HCM Constanța , but was dismissed there in October 2010 and coached the Saudi Arabian national team from September 2011 . This was followed by two short engagements with Železničar Niš . First he was committed in April 2012 to save the team from relegation, which also succeeded. When the start of the season was again weak with three defeats, the new coach Nikola Marković was dismissed and Cvetković brought again. But he only stayed until December. From March 2013 to 2015 he coached Borac Banja Luka , which won the Bosnian championship under his direction. From October 2016 he was the coach of the Serbian national team for the second time . After the European Championships in 2018 , he was released from his duties.

Private

Cvetković is married to Radmila Drljača , who was also a Yugoslav national player and won the silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. The couple have two children.
