Gerd Becker (born April 12, 1953 in Minden ) is a former German handball player . The middle back player played for TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen in the Bundesliga , with which he became German champion . He played 31 international games for the German national team , with which he took part in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal .

Career

The 1.88 m tall Becker moved from TuS Minderheide to TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen in 1970 . In 1972 he was with the A-youth and 1977 with the first team German champion, after it had previously only been enough to two runner-up championships. He won the DHB Cup three times and was in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup , where he missed the winning goal with a throw seconds before the end of regular time. In 1981 the team was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga and Becker ended his career at the age of 28 to concentrate on his profession as a dentist .

Becker was initially a youth international and was part of the team that played the first youth international match in the history of the DHB against Denmark in Minden on November 28, 1970 . He made his debut on July 1, 1974 against Israel in Cholon for the German national team . At the 1976 Olympics , he missed a medal with fourth place.

He currently runs the Minden Dental Center with two other doctors . He is married and has two children. Since 2011 he has been a member of the Advisory Board of GWD Minden .
