Historical logo of the BSG locomotive

From 1949 to 1970 there was an ice hockey section , whose team played mainly in the 2nd GDR ice hockey league or group league from 1954 to 1968 . The best places here were a second place in the seasons 1955/56 and 1958/59. As a result of the dissolution of the GDR ice hockey leagues in 1970 and the associated loss of state funding, the Meiningen ice hockey section dissolved, as did most of the other ice hockey clubs in the GDR.

The section was in the tradition of the ice hockey department of the SC Meiningen, which took part twice as Thuringian champions in the German championships in 1934 and 1935 .
