Erwin Heuer (born February 16, 1940 in Minderheide ) is a former German handball player and coach . With the German national team he was field handball world champion in 1966.
Career
Since Erwin Heuer has been interested in handball since his youth, he became a member of TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen , in whose handball department he played both field and indoor handball. Because of his excellent performance in both types of handball, he was soon used in both national and international competitions. At the German indoor handball championships in 1965 he took part as a defender and came with the team of Grün-Weiß Dankersen to the final, in which his team lost to Frischauf Göppingen with 13:12 and thus became German runner-up in indoor handball.
Because of his good performance, he was also active in the German national field handball team. At the world championships in field handball in 1966 he was in the German national team and achieved the World Cup victory with it through the last group game with a final character against the team of the former GDR . The two German teams drew with 15:15. Since the Federal Republic's team had scored more goals overall in the tournament, they became world champions in field handball according to the rules of the time.
Since no further world championships in field handball were held after this championship, this German team was later (unofficially) referred to as the "Eternal World Champion".
For winning the field handball world championship, Erwin Heuer and the German team were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf , the highest sporting award in the Federal Republic of Germany.
