Gústaf Þórarinn Bjarnason (born March 16, 1970 in Selfoss ) is a former Icelandic handball player. The left winger played in Germany for TV 08 Willstätt and GWD Minden in the Bundesliga .
career
Gústaf first played in his Icelandic homeland for UMF Selfoss and played for Haukar Hafnarfjörður from 1994 to 1998 . This was followed by a move to Germany to TV 08 Willstätt in the 2nd Bundesliga . In the same year, after winning a relegation against SG VfL / BHW Hameln, promotion to the Bundesliga followed . Despite the penultimate place in the table, Gústaf did not leave Willstätt as a relegation to GWD Minden . Due to the increase in the Bundesliga from 18 to 20 teams for the 2000/01 season , the 17th place in the table was enough to keep the league . With Minden, he finished ninth twice and once in twelfth place in the table in three years. In December 2002, in the 46th Mühlenkreis derby against TuS N-Lübbecke, he suffered meniscus damage in his right shoulder joint . Despite this injury, he played for Iceland at the World Cup in January, but then had to undergo an operation and could no longer play for GWD Minden. After his return to Iceland to UMF Stjarnan , he had to end his career in 2004 due to persistent pain in his limb.
Gústaf made his debut for the Icelandic national team in March 1991 and took part in four world championships ( 1993 , 1995 , 1997 and 2003 ), two European championships ( 2000 and 2002 ) and the 1992 Olympic Games , where he was not used. In total, he completed 144 international matches, in which he scored 335 goals.
On April 3, 1997, he scored 21 goals (two seven meters) in his hometown Selfoss in a 31:22 win over China , breaking the almost 31-year-old record of Hermann Gunnarsson , who scored 17 goals against the USA in 1966 . Gústaf's record for the most goals in an international match for Iceland remains unbroken to this day.
