The Kampa Hall is a no longer used multi-purpose hall in the East Westphalian city of Minden in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . It was closed on December 31, 2019 due to structural and fire-related defects. The demolition of the facility is planned for 2020.

history

The Kampa hall was opened in 1970 as the Minden district sports hall. The owner was the then Minden district . The hall was originally built for school sports. The Leo-Sympher-Berufskolleg, the Freiherr-vom-Stein -Berufskolleg of the Minden-Lübbecke district and the Besselgymnasium are in the immediate vicinity . In addition to school sports, the hall was also available for club sports, including for the handball club GWD Minden and the former women's handball national division TuS Eintracht Minden . In addition to sporting activities, there were also an increasing number of cultural events. So z. B. Chris de Burgh , Udo Jürgens , Ina Müller , Helge Schneider , Jennifer Rostock , Delirious? , Die Toten Hosen , Dieter Nuhr and Rüdiger Hoffmann in the Kreissporthalle.

Since the visitors had different demands on the handball league game as well as in the field of cultural events, the modernization of the district sports hall in Minden into a multifunctional facility (sport and culture) was necessary in 1999. With the financial support of a private sponsor , the prefabricated house manufacturer Kampa , and the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Urban Development, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the modernization could be realized. The district sports hall in Minden was renamed Kampa-Halle after the renovation phase. The hall was also used for various trade fairs, for example the GoFuture career orientation fair and a real estate fair.

In order for GWD to be promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in the 2012/13 season, new clocks had to be installed in the hall and a floor covering that was suitable for television had to be laid. A renovation of the hall has been discussed since 2014.

Closure of the hall

On December 31, 2019, the almost 50-year-old hall had to be closed due to serious building and fire protection deficiencies, as the operating permit was not extended. This was announced on October 11th of that year by the district administrator of the Minden-Lübbecke district, Ralf Niermann , at a press conference called at short notice. On October 8, an expert inspected the hall to decide whether it would continue to operate temporarily. The engineering office Kempen Krause Ingenieure GmbH came to the conclusion that operations beyond December 31, 2019 were no longer responsible for safety reasons. The parliamentary groups of the SPD and CDU, which made up the majority in the Minden-Lübbecke district assembly, spoke out clearly against a 15 million euro repair. This had an impact on many Minden clubs and school sports .

Since the closure of the hall was announced at short notice, it poses major challenges for the city and local associations. By the end of the current 2019/20 season, GWD Minden moved to the Merkur Arena , the venue of district rivals TuS N-Lübbecke , and is developing a temporary solution for the 2020/21 season. Since the Kampa-Halle was the only larger event location in the region, the city, district and the local economy have been discussing the financial feasibility of a multifunctional hall on the eastern side of the Weser, which will succeed the Kampa-Halle as an event location and as a new venue for GWD Minden should serve. As the successor to the Kampa hall as a school sports center, the district of Minden-Lübbecke is planning to build a new sports center on the site of the current hall, which will, however, be equipped with fewer than 200 seats. For the time of the demolition and the new building, it is not guaranteed that the school sports can take place properly, as the capacities of other surrounding sports halls are already exhausted. It is still unclear whether the swimming pool adjoining the hall can remain in place when a new hall is built.

The demolition of the hall is planned for 2020. This was decided on December 16, 2019 after weeks of discussions in the district council. Until the completion of a new building, Minden will not have a larger event hall for several years. The city of Minden and investors are planning a new multi-purpose hall for sports, concerts and other events near the train station . The district has decided on a grant of 14.5 million euros to the construction costs.
