development
ASV Hamm (General Sport Club Hamm) was founded in 1904 and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2004. It is one of the traditional clubs in Hamm, Westphalia .
Hammer handball players achieved their first successes on large handball fields of local or local clubs. At the beginning of the 1960s, handball was increasingly relocated to the sports halls of the cities and municipalities that today form the city of Hamm. Clubs like TuS Werries or SV Ostwennemar were already active between 1946 and 1951 in what was then the top division - the so-called Gauliga. The repeated successes of the Hammer handball clubs favored the development of a handball stronghold, with a long tradition comparable to that in the neighboring handball centers in Ostwestfalen-Lippe .
The rise to today's Bundesliga club began with the merging of TV Eintracht Ostwennemar, Germania Mark Werries and TuS Werries to form ASV 04/69 Hamm, which combined the forces of the clubs in Hammer Osten. In 1998, the various sports departments of the club became further independent. This was necessary to give the departments more freedom in development and to avoid the economic difficulties of ASV Hammer Eisbären affecting the entire ASV Hamm club. The Eisbären did not end the 1997/1998 season and were disbanded. As part of the separation, the club was given its current name ASV Hamm 04/69 Handball eV
The first men's team trained by ex-national player Kay Rothenpieler rose to the regional league at the beginning of the 2003/04 season. After two years in the regional league, ASV rose again in 2005 and played in the 2nd handball Bundesliga since the 2005/2006 season . In 2010 the team was promoted to the 1st handball Bundesliga as champions of the 2nd handball Bundesliga north .
On October 16, 2009, ASV Hamm and Ahlener SG had already announced the formation of a syndicate for the national leagues in order to pool the region’s strengths. The hoped-for economic and sporting effects did not materialize to the extent that those responsible had promised. In terms of sport, the only thing missing was a meager counter to keep up - a house that was always sold out also made positive headlines - but in the end the ambitious project turned out to be a size too big. Because the sporting pressure in view of the immense performance difference between the 1st and 2nd handball Bundesliga and the budget that was exhausted in favor of a squad that was as powerful as possible, as well as the rivalry that had been cultivated over many years, posed problems for those responsible from the start of the season. These difficulties were exacerbated by an economic distress which, thanks to the commitment of the partners and a waiver of wages by the players and service providers, did not lead to bankruptcy. But the HSG project failed due to the many difficulties in the summer. The final point was the dissolution of the HSG Ahlen-Hamm on June 29, 2011. Both clubs appeared again with their own first teams in the 2011/12 season. The Ahlener SG, which had the right to play for the third division team of the HSG (HSG Youngsters), entered the third division west. ASV Hamm started in the 2nd handball Bundesliga under the name ASV Hamm-Westphalia.
The association carries out intensive youth work in the women's and men's area, which contributes to its sporting success. The ASV has become known far beyond the Westphalian state borders. The titles won include, for example, the Westphalia champion of the male C youth in 1987 and the German champion of the male B youth in 1989 . The ASV women's team has established itself in the major league. ASV Hamm and HSE Hamm have been playing together as SG handball hamm since summer 2014. These numerous adult and youth teams have since formed the foundation of the Bundesliga club ASV Hamm-Westfalen.
2-5-1 club
For the 2nd league season 2014/15 the ASV founded the 2-5-1 club. The idea is to get ASV Hamm-Westfalen , currently playing in the 2nd handball league , back into the 1st handball league within 5 years . This is where the name comes from: from the 2nd Bundesliga, in 5 years, to the 1st Bundesliga. The association is looking for support and sponsors to prepare for a possible promotion.

- 1 In the season 2010/11 of the HBL the ASV started with the Ahlener SG as HSG Ahlen-Hamm . This syndicate broke up again for the 2011/12 season.
Venue
In the vicinity of the old arena, the gymnasium of Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium Hamm, a new hall was opened at the beginning of July 2008 for the handball international match between Germany and Egypt. Today it bears the name Westpress-Arena and is located between the Maxi-Center (shopping center) and the Maximilian ice rink in the Hammer district of Werries ( Hamm-Uentrop district ). The old venue became too small and no longer offered sufficient training capacities for professional sports. The new arena has 2,650 seats, of which around 2,000 are seated and around 650 are standing (up to the summer of 2014 it was 2,500, then the escape routes were recalculated and thus increased capacities in the standing area). It meets the requirements for Bundesliga operations. HSG Ahlen-Hamm moved a game to Dortmund's Westfalenhalle in the 2010/11 season , which was sold out with 11,000 spectators, just like all other home games in the 2010/11 season in the Maxipark Arena (2,500). The average of 3,000 spectators earned the HSG a place among the German top 100 sports facilities in terms of audience numbers in 2010.
