Mark Schmetz (born January 3, 1977 in Geleen , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch handball player and current handball trainer .

Player career

Schmetz, was used mostly as a right winger. He is considered the most successful Dutch handball player.

Mark Schmetz started playing handball in his hometown at the first division club Hirschmann / V & L. At V&L he also made his debut in the first Dutch league and won the Dutch Cup once before moving to TSG Herdecke in Germany in 1998 in the second handball league . In 2000 he joined the first division club SG Wallau / Massenheim ; During his time with Hessen, he was voted Dutch handball player of the year in 2001.

In 2002 Schmetz went to the top club TUSEM Essen . Here he won the EHF Cup in 2005 ; this makes Schmetz the first ever Dutch European handball cup winner. In the same year, however, the sporting low blow for his club: Essen did not receive a Bundesliga license for the 2005/06 season and had to be relegated to the regional league. Schmetz was one of only three players who made it into the regional league. Essen rose immediately back to the 2nd league in 2006 and in 2007 to the 1st handball league . In 2008 Schmetz left Essen for Lemgo. In 2010 he won the EHF Cup for the second time with the TBV. Schmetz then moved to the new Bundesliga club HSG Ahlen-Hamm; the syndicate was dissolved again after relegation.

At the end of the 2011/12 season Schmetz temporarily ended his active handball career, but returned in February 2016 to his long-term club TUSEM Essen and helped out in the 2nd handball league.

Coaching career

From 2012 Schmetz worked as head coach at the Dutch first division club HV KRAS / Volendam . Under his leadership, Volendam won the Dutch championship and the trophy in 2013. In summer 2016 he moved to league competitor Limburg Lions . The Lions won the Dutch championship in 2017 under his leadership. In spring 2019 he ended his work with the Limburg Lions. For the 2020/21 season he will take over the German club SG Schalksmühle-Halver .
