The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is a small engineering college in Terre Haute with around 1600 students (as of 2003). In addition to the bachelor's degree programs (4 years) in almost all engineering sciences, there is a graduate program, e.g. B. in Engineering Management ( industrial engineering ). From 2001 to 2009 it was named "Best Undergraduate Engineering College of the Year" by US News, making it a good alternative to colleges such as MIT, Virginia Tech or the California Institute of Technology for many students. Rose-Hulman IT is also regularly mentioned in publications such as "The Best Buys in College Education" and "Barron's Guide to the Most Prestigious Colleges". Nevertheless, the majority of the students come from the "closer" area of the two states of Indiana and Illinois .
location
The campus is about 10 km east of the city center. All freshmen and a large part of the older semesters live on campus. There are also a number of fraternity houses and a large sports center.
history
The foundation stone was laid on September 11, 1875. It was named Rose Polytechnic Institute after founder Chauncey Rose, an entrepreneur who immigrated from Scotland. In 1903 the college had over 200 students for whom no student dormitories existed. In 1922 work began on building a new campus on the grounds of the Hulman family. This included Deming Hall, the college's first student residence. The campus has expanded steadily over the years and the college was renamed the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1971.
