He was with Arup from 1956 , completed the remainder of his civil engineering studies at Imperial College London in 1957 and returned to Arup in 1958. He worked on the roof of the Sydney Opera House, initially as an assistant to Ian MacKenzie, and when he fell ill, he was responsible for himself. Among other things, he wrote the computer program for assembling the roof segments. In total, he worked on the opera house project for seven years. He then spent a year and a half in New York for Arup. From 1971 he was involved in the Center Pompidou project (architects Renzo Piano , Richard Rogers ), under Edmund Happold as chief engineer at Arup. In 1977 he founded his own company RFR (with architect Ian Ritchie ), but remained a partner at Arup and was involved in the building project for Lloyd's of London (architect Richard Rogers), which was completed in 1984. In 1977 he founded L'Atelier Piano & Rice with Renzo Piano .

At the same time he worked a lot in Paris, for example the glass walls of the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie in La Villette, the tent-like roof in the Grand Arche of La Défense and in 1985 under the architect IM Pei on glass facades and roofs in the Louvre (like the Glass pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre ). Other projects of his were the renovation of Lord's Cricket Ground (architect Michael Hopkins ), the Opera House in Toronto (architect Moshe Safdie ), the west facade of Lille Cathedral , London Stansted Airport and Kansai International Airport (architect Renzo Piano).

He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1991 and died the following year.

He married Sylvia Watson in 1965, with whom he had a son and three daughters.

As the second engineer after Ove Arup, he received the gold medal for architecture from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1992 .
