Martin Birkner (born March 12, 1957 ) is a former German handball player and coach . The goalkeeper became German champion with TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen .

Career

Birkner began playing handball at TuS Südhemmern and in 1975, when he was A youth at TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen, became the third goalkeeper in the Bundesliga team. There he was initially only used in friendly matches and played in the reserve team in the Association League. When Martin Karcher withdrew from the club in March 1977, he became number two behind Rainer Niemeyer . On his 20th birthday on March 12, 1977, Birkner made his Bundesliga debut in a 23:15 away win at SC Phönix Essen and was thus German champion at the end of the season. In the 21:20 final win against TV Großwallstadt , however, he was not used. From the 1979/80 season he increasingly moved back to the 2nd team due to injury problems and decided to move to rival TuS Nettelstedt . But even there he first had to play in the second team and therefore had no part in the victory in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981 . Only after two years did he move to the Bundesliga team. At the end of the season, the club was relegated and Birkner moved to the second division VfL Hameln . In 1986 the promotion to the Bundesliga could be celebrated. Then he joined the upper division TV Sachsenroß Hille . A year later he rose with the club in the regional league. At the end of 1989 he tore a cruciate ligament and ended his career in February 1990.

From 1988 to 1993 he was coach of the B and A youth of the TV Sachsenrß Hille. After a one-year break, he returned to the A youth team until 1996.

Others

Birkner studied sport and biology at Bielefeld University and passed his second state examination in May 1987 . As an unemployed sports teacher, TV Hille hired him from December 1987 as part of a job creation scheme . He was very busy taking care of popular sports .

From 1995 onwards, Birkner had visual problems. Investigations revealed that he had uveitis , which ultimately led to his almost complete blindness . Nevertheless, he ran the Minden Marathon in 2001 and the half marathon at the Porta Marathon in 2010 . He also continues to work as a teacher at a special school for intellectual development.
