Axel Geerken (born October 15, 1972 in Oldenburg ) is a former German handball player who has been managing director of MT Melsungen since September 2012 .
Career
Axel Geerken moved in 1993 from SG VTB / Altjührden to Wetzlar to the then second division HSG Dutenhofen / Münchholzhausen . After the goalkeeper surprisingly reached the DHB Cup final with the HSG in 1997 , which however was lost to TBV Lemgo , he switched to Bundesliga club TV Großwallstadt .
After a season in Großwallstadt, he moved to THW Kiel . The trained tax assistant won the championship and the DHB Cup with the Kiel team in 1999 and 2000 . In addition, he was in the EHF Champions League final in 2000 , where the THW was defeated by FC Barcelona .
A year later, Geerken returned to the HSG, which had since been renamed HSG Wetzlar and played in the Bundesliga. In 2006 he became managing director of the HSG, but was part of the top division team for another year. In 2007 he ended his career after nearly 300 Bundesliga games. In 2008, however, he played two more games at Frisch Auf Göppingen , whose goalkeeper Martin Galia had previously been seriously injured. Even after the injury of the Wetzlar goalkeeper Zoran Đorđić in the first half of the 2008/09 season, Geerken made headlines again as "managing goalkeeper".
As the successor to François-Xavier Houlet , he was sports director and managing director of VfL Gummersbach from February 1, 2010 to May 2012 .
Since September 1st, 2012 he has been managing director of the handball Bundesliga club MT Melsungen.
Geerken made his debut on April 15, 1997 in the national team against Russia . He played a total of 10 international matches.
In the period from July 1, 2015 to May 27, 2016, Geerken completed his part-time training to become a European handball manager at the Cologne Sports University in cooperation with the EHF and completed his studies as the best of his year.
In 2019, Geerken acquired the goalkeeping coach license from the German Handball Federation (DHB).
Private
His wife Andrea is the sister of his former Wetzlar teammates Andreas and Wolfgang Klimpke . He has a daughter and a son with her.
