Wolfgang Klimpke (born February 12, 1967 in Wetzlar ) is a former German handball player and coach who played for the Bundesliga club HSG Wetzlar .
Sports
The Kreisläufer played for over 30 years for the Wetzlar club, which initially played as TSV Dutenhofen , later as HSG Dutenhofen / Münchholzhausen and HSG D / M Wetzlar and finally as HSG Wetzlar . Klimpke went through all youth teams and played in the club's first team from the mid-1980s. He stayed with the club until the end of his career in 2003. He was a figure of identification among the HSG fans and, like no other player, was symbolic of the club's long-term rise to the top German division.
successes
Wolfgang Klimpke was involved in almost all of the great successes of Dutenhofen and Wetzlar handballs. He won the German championship in 1982 with the C-youth and in 1984 with the B-youth. In the senior division, he was twice in the DHB Cup finals , made it to the European Cup final in 1998 , first rose to the 2nd Bundesliga , then promoted to the Bundesliga and never relegated.
Coaching
Together with Róbert Sighvatsson , Klimpke coached the HSG Wetzlar Bundesliga team from October 2006 to February 2007. Before and afterwards he was the club's assistant coach for some time.
family
Klimpke belongs to a family closely associated with handball and the HSG. His younger brother Andreas also played for the HSG in the Bundesliga; today he is the HSG's U23 coach. Klimpke's wife Ruth is the head of the HSG Wetzlar office. His older son Till Klimpke is now a goalkeeper at HSG Wetzlar and a German national goalkeeper. Like his father, he became a German youth champion with the club ( 2017 with the A youth). Wolfgang Klimpke's younger son Ole is a backcourt player in the A youth Bundesliga team of the HSG.
