The Hochleithenwald is an extensive mixed forest area in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel . The communities of Bockfließ , Hochleithen and Wolkersdorf ( Mistelbach district ) as well as Bad Pirawarth and Groß-Schweinbarth ( Gänserndorf district ) have a share in this .
The eastern part in the Gänserndorf district is called the Traunwald on some maps ; in fact, the forest is owned by the Traun Forest Administration.
Location description
The forest is about 15 km north of Vienna .
description
The Hochleithenwald is the largest oak-hornbeam forest in the Weinviertel. Despite its location in the metropolis of Vienna, the forest has hardly been discovered by tourists, although the extensive mixed forest area has a variety of flora and fauna to offer. The forest is used for forestry purposes, but the characteristic feature of the forest is the oil production with horse head pumps , large parts of which are cordoned off.
There are several trees in it that are protected by the state of Lower Austria as a natural monument : an oak (the "binding oak"), a white pine and a picture oak near the forester's house (picture). At the southern exit of the forest in the direction of Pillichsdorf / Großengersdorf there is a second picture tree with a picture of St. Barbara , patroness of geologists and miners.
