The Absdorf-Hippersdorf-Krems an der Donau line is a single-track, electrified main line in the Austrian state of Lower Austria . It is part of the core network of ÖBB Infrastruktur AG . Since the railway line was built as a wing runway by the Kaiser Franz-Josephs-Bahn- Gesellschaft, it is colloquially simply referred to as the Franz-Josefs-Bahn or the "Kremser Branch" of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn .
history
After the opening of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn between Vienna and Budweis in 1870, construction of the line between Krems and Absdorf-Hippersdorf began. The initiator of the railway line was the kk privileged Kaiser Franz-Josephs-Bahn (KFJB), this was a private railway company in Austria , which got its name in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph . Four construction law firms were set up in Krems, Hadersdorf am Kamp, Kirchberg am Wagram and Absdorf-Hippersdorf, from which construction work began at the same time. The line was opened on January 10, 1872 as a wing line of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn for passenger and freight traffic. Initially, today's Etsdorf - Straß station was run as Hadersdorf station and later as Hadersdorf-Etsdorf station. Only with the opening of the Kamptalbahn in 1889 was today's Hadersdorf station built and initially named Hadersdorf Lokalbahn . On April 2, 1945, an Allied bombing raid on the Krems train station, which severely damaged the line in this area, left over 100 dead, as a memorial plaque on the station building today commemorates. After two years of construction, the then transport minister Karl Lausecker opened the electrification of the railway line on September 24, 1982 with a special train . In December 2009, the S-Bahn line 4 from Krems via Stockerau to Vienna-Meidling was replaced by the S-Bahn line 3 , but this only runs to Absdorf-Hippersdorf.
technology
The route is equipped with the PZB train protection system and belongs to route class D4 or between Hadersdorf am Kamp and Krems an der Donau to route class D3. The Etsdorf - Straß train station is remote-controlled from Hadersdorf am Kamp, while the Kirchberg am Wagram , Fels and Absdorf-Hippersdorf train stations are remote-controlled from the Vienna operations center. The route is unoccupied and closed between around 11 p.m. and around 4 a.m. The hot box detection system / fixed brake detection system for block brakes / disc brake detection system (HOA / FOA / SOA) located at kilometer 27,850 uses infrared sensors to monitor the temperature of the axle bearings and the block and disc brakes of passing trains. In the event of an alarm, the train concerned is stopped and checked in the wagon inspection station in Krems an der Donau. The monitoring of the system is integrated into the operational information system of the Krems an der Donau station.
passenger traffic
The route is run every hour by regional express trains to and from Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof . These trains pass through the Gedersdorf and Rohrendorf stops . Other trains that run every hour to two hours run over the Kamptalbahn to and from Horn or Sigmundsherberg and serve the Gedersdorf and Rohrendorf stations . At peak times, traffic is concentrated in the respective load direction. This timetable concept for the entire route has existed since the changeover to a regular timetable in the eastern region, which was introduced in 2015. Before that, there were hourly REX trains between Vienna and Krems, which only served a few stops, and regional trains that ran irregularly and stopped at all stations.
When the timetable changed in December 2012, a pair of trains ran via Tulln City and the new Westbahn to Vienna's Westbahnhof for the first time. This pair of trains was discontinued after 3 years.
During the closure of the Tulln Danube Bridge in 2009, there were also individual trains that ran via Stockerau and the main S-Bahn line to and from Payerbach - Reichenau . The REX consist of a double-decker push-pull train and a class 1142 or 1144 locomotive . The trains to the Kamptal run with class 5047 diesel multiple units, which were also used on the former regional train services.
Freight transport
In freight traffic, the route is primarily used by shunting freight trains. Most of the journeys take place in the mornings on weekdays except Saturday. Direct freight trains and international container trains to and from Krems an der Donau also use the route. These trips only take place on certain days of the week and sometimes only as required.
expansion
According to an announcement by the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region , Hadersdorf am Kamp station is to be equipped with a fourth platform edge by 2023 in order to be able to guarantee better transfer connections between the Absdorf-Hippersdorf-Krems an der Donau line and the Kamptalbahn through a clock hub .
criticism
Since the railway line is single-track with the exception of the Krems urban area and the station areas, the trains have to wait regularly in the stations for counter-trains to be able to continue their journey. These waiting times can be up to 7 minutes per train station and thus extend the travel time. Nevertheless, despite a constant increase in train density, no double-track expansion is planned according to ÖBB Infrastruktur.
