The Horn northeast station is a through station in the county town of Horn on the Kamp Valley Railway . The station is the operational center of the Kamptalbahn, as most journeys towards Sigmundsherberg and Krems / Danube end or begin here. The station has the largest volume of passengers in the mornings and afternoons, as the majority of passengers commute to Vienna (via Sigmundsherberg) and Krems / St. Pölten off.

history

The identical reception building by Gars is still in its original state in the 21st century

The railway connection to Horns was originally planned as early as the 1860s by the Franz-Josefs-Bahn. This was not implemented for reasons of cost, as the primary goal of the private installation company was to connect Bohemia with Vienna. Instead of the tour via Horn, the Horner Basin between Eggenburg and Göpfritz was bypassed via Sigmundsherberg, Hötzelsdorf and Irnfritz. Despite the setback, the city of Horn continued to try to establish a rail link. These efforts only bore fruit when the state of Lower Austria commissioned the private Austrian Local Railway Company to build a local railway between Sigmundsherberg and Herzogenburg using the existing line between Hadersdorf am Kamp and Krems . The station was finally built in the course of the construction of the Kamptalbahn in the 1880s and opened in 1889. Since the Kamptalbahn was built and opened together with the Kremser Bahn , the station building is identical to the one from Gars-Thunau , Statzendorf and Furth-Palt . The Horner train station has lost its original appearance through renovations that have been reduced to the minimum.

In the 1980s, the closure of the Kamptalbahn was repeatedly discussed, which would have closed the station to passenger traffic. This could be prevented due to the efforts of the population and the state of Lower Austria.

present

The station has a heated waiting room with seating and a public toilet.

The station has two earth platforms. In order to be able to reach platform 2 from the house platform 1, the tracks must be crossed. Outside of peak times, trains going south (towards Krems / St. Pölten) run from platform 1, while trains running north (towards Sigmundsherberg) run from platform 2.

In addition to the two platform tracks, there is another track without a platform and on the west side of the station there is still a loading / siding to the Horn warehouse .

At the entrance to the train station there is a bus stop, to the north there is a P + R facility with a capacity of 30 parking spaces.

The dispatcher required for train control on the Kamptalbahn is located in Horn station and controls the entire route from there. In contrast to other stations in the Waldviertel or Weinviertel, the dispatcher does not sell tickets at this station, but there is a ticket machine on platform 1 and in the 5047 trains used .

future

The state of Lower Austria is planning to build the Spange Horn between the Franz-Josefs-Bahn and the Kamptalbahn together with the ÖBB . This would make it possible to direct trains from Vienna to Horn. The state of Lower Austria plans to complete this project in 2030. Included in this project would be the electrification of the Kamptalbahn between Sigmundsherberg and Horn and the modernization of the train station in Horn.
