The Sigmundsherberg station (opened as Sigmundsherberg horn ) is a junction station in the municipality Sigmundsherberg in the district of Horn in the Waldviertel. This is where the Zellerndorf – Sigmundsherberg line, built in 1872 by the Austrian Northwest Railway , and the Kamptalbahn, built in 1889, branch off from the Franz-Josefs-Bahn, which runs from Vienna to Gmünd, east of the platform area. Regular operations (passenger and freight traffic) have only taken place on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn and the Kamptalbahn since the Pulkau Valley Railway was shut down from Zellerndorf to Sigmundsherberg. The station has both a bus stop as a link to bus services to the Waldviertel and Weinviertel as well as a park-and-ride facility south of the station.

history

The station was built in the course of the construction of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn between Eggenburg and Gmünd in the 1860s and opened under the name Sigmundsherberg-Horn . Despite the fact that the station was not originally planned (the Franz-Josefs-Bahn was originally supposed to be built over Horn), it quickly developed into a railway junction with the construction of the Zellerndorf – Sigmundsherberg and Kamptalbahn lines . The station has always been an intermediate stop for the international long-distance trains that run to Prague, Berlin and Hamburg. The station was of particular importance during the First World War because of the Sigmundsherberg prisoner of war camp, as the goods were handled here. Beginning with the outsourcing of international freight traffic to the northern line, the station was downgraded to a local traffic stop when the route of long-distance trains such as the Vindobona was changed.

In 1985 there were major changes when the Franz-Josefs-Bahn between Absdorf-Hippersdorf and Sigmundsherberg was electrified. Henceforth there was an obligation to switch from electric to diesel locomotives. In 1995, with the electrification of the line to Gmünd, the train station was modernized and platforms were built, which enable barrier-free trains to be boarded at ground level.

Investments

The station has a heated waiting room with seating and a men's and women's toilet. On platform 1 there are newspaper stands for the free newspaper Heute . The platform has three main platforms for operation on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn. The house platform (track 1) is connected to both a level crossing and the overpass with the island platform (tracks 2 and 3). In addition, there are platform 21 and the extended platform 2 for the Kamptalbahn, which are connected to the island platform.

The station also has three through tracks and a few sidings, which are used both for goods traffic and for parking the railcars ( ÖBB 5047 , ÖBB Cityjet ) and local transport vehicles. In addition, a diesel locomotive of the 2016 series is stationed in Sigmundsherberg . This is used for shunting goods traffic on the Kamptalbahn between Sigmundsherberg and Horn and on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn.

Exhibits from the Sigmundsherberg Railway Museum are on display opposite the station building .

Train connections

An important connection for commuters is the Franz-Josefs-Bahn to Vienna FJB. On the Kamptaltalbahn to Sigmundsherberg there are mainly feeder trains to the regional express trains to Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof . Most of these feeder trains begin and end in Horn (Lower Austria) . On the Franz-Josefs-Bahn there is an hourly service between Vienna FJB and Sigmundsherberg during the day due to the overlapping of the two-hour trains Vienna FJB – Sigmundsherberg and Vienna FJB – Gmünd / České Velenice. This cycle is compressed to half an hourly cycle during rush hour.
