The station building was built in 1888/89 as part of the construction of the Kamptalbahn. The station is unoccupied and is looked after by the Horn train control station . history
After the construction of the Kamptalbahn, opened in 1889, Gars am Kamp developed into the most important summer resort in the Kamptal, which could be easily reached via the Kamptalbahn. In addition to passenger traffic, the station was also of particular importance as a freight station, as there were several large mills in Gars am Kamp, which almost exclusively dispatched their milled products via the Gars-Thunau station.
The station was extensively renovated in 1989/90. In 2004 the goods handling buildings on the station premises were demolished and a new central platform was built. The station building is a listed building . An identically constructed station building, which has lost its original character due to insensitive renovation measures, is located - also on the Kamptalbahn - in Horn and other identically constructed station buildings in Statzendorf and Furth near Göttweig .
