Sauherad
Sauherad was a Norwegian municipality in the province of Telemark (merged into Vestfold og Telemark in 2020 ). Its administrative headquarters were in Akkerhaugen. Sauherad formed the Central Telemark region together with Bø and Nome . As part of the municipal reform in Norway , Sauherad was merged with Bø on January 1, 2020, with the administrative center in Bø. The municipality is called Midt-Telemark .
Geographical location
The municipality of Sauherad was in the east of Telemark, about 30 km from Skien and about 100 km from Oslo . Neighboring communes were Kongsberg in the east, Skien in the southwest, Nome in the southwest, Bø in the west, and Notodden in the north. Sauherad bordered the province of Buskerud , today Viken , in the northeast . South of Sauherad met the Norsjø , in the north the Heddalsvatnet . The highest elevation was the Vardefjell with 815 moh. The hilly area of Sauheradsfjella bordered it to the west .
4293 inhabitants lived in an area of 321.37 km² (as of January 1, 2019). The municipality was divided into the places Hjuksebø , Nordagutu , Akkerhaugen , Gvarv and Hørte . The municipality number was 0822. The last rådmann was Hans Erik Utne, the last mayor was Hans Sundsvalen ( Ap ).

Sauherad was traversed by Riksvei 36 , Fylkesvei 360 and the smaller Fylkesvei 44, 151, 551, 553 and 555. The Sørlandsbanen and the Bratsbergbanen ran through Sauherad . Railway stations were in Gvarv , Prestholt , Moen , Nordagutu , Holtsås , Hjuksebø , Dalsvatn ; but only the Nordagutu station was still in operation.
education
Gvarv owned a school from 1st to 10th grade. Other schools were in Akkerhaugen (1st to 7th), Nordagutu (1st to 4th) and Hjuksebø (1st to 7th grade). The Sagavoll Adult Education Center and a public library were also located in Gvarv.
Culture and sights
There was a medieval church in Sauherad, the Sauherad Church. It was one of two medieval churches in the Sauherad and Nes parish. Since Sauherad was one of the largest apple-growing areas in Telemark and Norway in general, the Norsk Eplefest , the Norwegian apple festival, took place there every year . The Kartfestivalen music festival , which was very well known in the region , has been held in Gvarv since 2005 . The Patmos Sculpture Park was also located in Akkerhaugen.
