Kragerø is a small town in southern Norway on the Skagerrak coast in the province of Vestfold og Telemark . The place is the economic and administrative center of the municipality of Kragerø . In summer the city is strongly influenced by tourism.
Surname
The name is derived either from the Old Norse form "Krákarøy" of crows or ravens on the islands (øy means island) or from the Old Norse term "Krag" for cliffs and rocks.
geography
Kragerø is located in the typically hilly coastal landscape of southern Norway. At 153.8 m, the Storkollen is the highest point in the city. The stone man in the back of the old town reaches a height of 68 m. The highest point of the offshore island Øya in the south , whose name simply means island, is Veten at 51 m. The fjords of Bærøy and Kragerøfjord meet at Øya . Karlstadkilen is located in the northeast and northwest of the city. It is divided into the bays of Ytre Kalstadkilen and Indre Kalstadkilen .
The city of Kragerø is mostly located on a peninsula in the archipelago. The Holm Gunnarsholmen , like Øya, is part of the urban area. The center of Kragerø is on the southeast coast of the peninsula. In the north is the Lona district, in the southwest Bjønebyen and in the far west Karlstad.
South of the Lona district is the Holmmyra wetland with the Kalstadtjenna lake . It is part of the 12.5 hectare Frydensborg animal and plant protection area . A 4.7 hectare nature reserve, which was established in June 2006, lies on the southern slopes of Storkollens. It consists mainly of coniferous and mixed forest .
history
Kragerø was an up-and-coming coastal town in the 17th century, which was subject to the town charter of skiing. All public facilities and privileges were incumbent on the city, which is about 60 km away. With the up-and-coming timber industry , Kragerø and the nearby town of Sannikedal became an important port of export. In the middle of the century, the Dutchman Gabriel Marselius built an iron mine at the gates of Kragerø that was generally only known under the name of Cragerøes Berckverk . In 1651 the place got its own church. The distrust of the city of Skien grew and Kragerø wanted its independence. Nils Søfrensen, at that time the most powerful man in Kragerø, managed to get admitted to the royal court in Copenhagen thanks to his good contacts, including with Norway's governor Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve . There he made the request for the town charter of Kragerø and offered the king to build a galley with five cannons and give it to the crown. Then Kragerø received city rights on January 16, 1666. Until the 20th century the place was an important port of export, for this reason Kragerø was also the seat of a German consul.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Kragerø was one of the centers of natural ice export . In the vicinity of the city there were at least 35 production facilities for natural ice (ice ponds and ice dams) and in 1899 alone, ice was exported in a volume of 135,300 register tons. Trade went to Great Britain and France, as well as to Germany in warmer winters.
