Rauland is a place in the municipality of Vinje in the province of Vestfold og Telemark . It is located at around 700 meters above sea level along Lake Totak .
history
The name Rauland, formerly Rauðaland, comes from the Old Norse language and is probably composed of the two words »Rauði« (lawn iron stone ) and »land«. On the banks of the Totak is the Sporaneset headland, known for its rock carvings from the late Stone Age or early Bronze Age.

The place Krossen was the administrative center of the community. On January 1, 1964, it was merged with the Vinje municipality to form the new Vinje municipality. At that time, Rauland had 1,656 inhabitants.
