life and work

Thomas Karban, born in 1966, first studied musicology in Bonn and Hamburg . A total of 31 issues were published. Karban had previously worked as a reviewer for the specialist magazine Die Filmharmonischen Blätter .

Karban has also been working as a music producer and music consultant in Hamburg for the soundtrack label Silva Screen and for EDEL Music Publishing since the late 1980s . Together with the American composer and conductor William Motzing , he had numerous large orchestral recordings with various Prague orchestras such as the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra or the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra . He oversaw productions by internationally renowned composers such as Dov Seltzer, Michael J. Lewis , Bill Conti and Peer Raben . As a long-time connoisseur and companion of the film music scene, he himself conducted numerous interviews (including with Robert Folk, the American composer of the Police Academy series).

As a critical journalist, Karban repeatedly took controversial positions on issues relating to the music budget of a film or the composer's musical rights. In addition to his work for the Filmmusik-Dienst , Karban also wrote numerous articles, reviews and reviews on film music or film history topics for various other journals, such as film-dienst , Film-Zeit or the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik . As a film historian, he also criticized the New German Cinema for the lack of an active film music tradition.

reception

"With the music by Peer Rabens for the film Happy Birthday, Turk, the soundtrack producer Thomas Karban names a very striking example of how the music is used in a different sense than that for which it was originally composed."

- Julian Schwantes : Film music in Germany and France under the microscope: a historical, stylistic, economic and legal view of similarities and differences between film music in the two countries

Karban himself took an active part in collecting and archiving original scores and film music recordings throughout his life. He had one of his last public appearances as a musical advisor and commentator on the documentary film in Der Klang der Bilder (1995) by director Marcus O. Rosenmüller .
