The Nisser is a lake in the municipalities of Nissedal and Kviteseid in the Norwegian province of Vestfold og Telemark . The name is derived from the old Norwegian word Niðsær , which means something like "roaring sea".

The main tributary is the Straumen from Vråvatn , while the outflow via the Nisserelva , which joins the Fyresdalsåna at Haugsjåsund and becomes the Nidelva , which in turn flows into the North Sea at Arendal . The Nisser is thus part of the Arendalsvassdraget river system .

The Nisser is the largest lake in Telemark and Norway's tenth largest lake. The length is approx. 35 km. The Telemarksvegen runs along the east bank .
