At the age of 10 he started speed skating with the Chemnitz skater community and started his competitive career a year later. In 2003 he moved to the Chemnitz Speed Skating Club . In 2006 he ran the German record over 3000 m in the 16/17 age group with 4.05.01. After graduating from high school in 2008 at the Sportgymnasium Chemnitz , he moved to André Unterdörfel in Berlin. In the Junior World Championships in 2007 in the Austrian Innsbruck he won along with Patrick Beckert and Eric Rauschenbach second place in the Team Pursuit. Before South Korea they only had to admit defeat to the trio from the Netherlands . In the preliminary round, the three ran a track record with 4.08.20 and left the Dutch trio around Jan Blokhuijsen , Tim Roelofsen and Sjoerd de Vries behind them with 4.08.87.
In 2012 he prevailed against the national competition and became German champion in the great four- way battle . Three times at the start, three times on the podium and thus three times bronze, was the motto of the Pursuit team at the 2011/12 World Cup for the "black and red locomotive".
Baumgärtner is a sports soldier in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr Frankenberg and has the rank of staff sergeant.
